Settings and data

You can begin with the defaults. The settings most people may want to change are:

  • Desired retention controls how often FSRS schedules reviews. Higher retention means more reviews and fewer expected lapses; lower retention means a smaller workload. The default is 85%. Change it in small steps and give the new workload time to settle. This preference syncs; fitted FSRS parameters have a separate sync limit.
  • Review ordering chooses words first or a mixed word/sentence queue. New cards controls whether learning cards appear before, after, or mixed with reviews.
  • Stats counting mode counts word cards only or all cards, including sentences.
  • Day boundary timezone controls which local date receives reviews and study time. It syncs across devices; leave it unchanged while traveling and update it if you move.
  • Sync Server (macOS) starts or stops the server used by Android sync and KOReader.

Day boundary timezone

The day boundary is pinned to a timezone on first launch. Change it if you move permanently; travel alone need not change it. This setting syncs as a preference.

Offline use

Tsumu works offline for browsing existing cards, review, study logging, and dictionary lookups. Audio is fetched online when a card is created; if there is no connection or no recording, the card is saved without it. Yomitan and KOReader connections require the relevant app/server to be running.

Back up and restore your collection

Your collection consists of a SQLite database and a media/ folder in local app storage: - macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Tsumu/ (contains tsumu_srs.db, SQLite WAL files, and media/) - Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Tsumu\ - Android: Kept in private app sandbox storage. Use Device Sync to transfer your collection to desktop for backup.

Creating a manual backup

  1. Quit Tsumu completely to ensure all pending SQLite Write-Ahead Log transactions (tsumu_srs.db-wal and tsumu_srs.db-shm) are committed and flushed to the primary database file.
  2. Copy the entire Tsumu folder to your backup drive or cloud storage. Do not copy only the .db file while the application is running.

Restoring a backup

To restore your collection on a new or existing computer: 1. Ensure Tsumu is closed. 2. Replace the contents of the application support directory with your backed-up folder (including both the database and the media/ directory). 3. Relaunch Tsumu. The app will open the database and verify schema integrity automatically.

Import and export

There is currently no in-app Anki collection import or export dialog. A developer import script exists in the source repository for importing sentence APKGs, but it is not an end-user UI feature. To migrate or preserve your cards, rely on full-folder backups or direct device sync.
